2024: Amogy’s Year in Review

2024 was a defining year for Amogy as we made meaningful progress in advancing our vision for a net-zero future. We built valuable partnerships, strengthened our position as a leader in cleantech innovation, and advanced the promise of ammonia as a sustainable fuel. Most notably, we achieved a groundbreaking milestone: the successful demonstration of the world’s first carbon-free, ammonia-powered maritime vessel. Read on as we recap an extraordinary year.

Advancing Toward Commercialization

This year marked significant progress in bringing our ammonia-to-power technology closer to commercial adoption. We established partnerships with forward-thinking companies motivated by the opportunity to reduce their carbon footprint with innovative solutions. We received Approvals in Principle (AiPs) from esteemed classification societies, including Lloyd’s Register, the American Bureau of Shipping, and the Liberian Registry, for vessel designs featuring our ammonia-powered system—developed in collaboration with industry leaders such as Samsung Heavy Industries, Hyundai Heavy Industries, Capital Gas, and HD Hyundai Mipo. These approvals validate the feasibility and compliance of our technology with regulatory standards.

In major steps toward commercialization, we signed a contract with Hanwha Ocean to supply our ammonia-to-power system for deployment in a commercial vessel and received an order from Terox to integrate our system for electricity generation at construction sites. Additionally, we partnered with HD Hyundai Infracore and SK Innovation to jointly develop a distributed power generation system that combines HD Hyundai’s hydrogen engine with our ammonia-cracking technology.

Beyond these partnerships, ammonia has gained significant traction among policymakers. The International Maritime Organization has continued to take steps to pave the way for ammonia as a marine fuel. Additionally, a recent U.S. Department of Energy report highlighted ammonia’s versatility and scalability as a clean energy carrier.

We’re proud to collaborate with these visionary partners and stakeholders who share our commitment to driving meaningful change and building a more sustainable future.

Gaining Recognition

Amogy’s efforts did not go unnoticed. We were honored to be named to Fast Company’s list of the World’s Most Innovative Companies of 2024—a testament to the pioneering work of our team. Additionally, we were included in Cleantech Group’s Global Cleantech 100 for the second consecutive year and featured on TIME’s list of America’s Top Greentech Companies. These accolades underscore the significant impact of our work in the cleantech and sustainable energy sectors.

Furthermore, three exceptional Amogy team members—Anastasija Kuprijanova, Kathryn Dooley, and Ingrid Furuberg—were recognized on Hydrogen Economist’s 2024 Women in Hydrogen 50 list, highlighting their leadership and expertise. Anastasija Kuprijanova earned an additional honor being named as one of Marine Log’s Top Women in Maritime. These recognitions reflect the remarkable contributions of our team and reinforce the importance of amplifying diverse voices in these industries.

The NH3 Kraken: A Milestone Achievement

Amogy’s most defining moment of 2024 was the successful launch of the NH3 Kraken, the world’s first carbon-free, ammonia-powered maritime vessel. This ambitious project involved converting a 1957 tugboat to run on our ammonia-to-electrical power system. Thanks to the dedication of our team and the support of trusted partners and vendors, the vessel sailed the Hudson River in September, powered entirely by ammonia.

As part of this historic demonstration, we conducted the first ammonia bunkering operation in the United States. Establishing safe and efficient bunkering procedures is a critical step toward scaling ammonia as a viable maritime fuel. With this project, we showed that ammonia can be safely bunkered onto a vessel, which marked a historic step for U.S. maritime innovation.

The demonstration showcased the potential of our technology to revolutionize the maritime sector and solidified ammonia’s viability as a sustainable marine fuel. It was a tangible step toward achieving net-zero emissions and a powerful example of innovation in action.

Reflecting on this accomplishment, we’re inspired to push boundaries further. The NH3 Kraken symbolizes not only a milestone for Amogy but also hope for a cleaner, greener future.

Looking Ahead

As we close the chapter on 2024, we look forward to an even brighter year ahead. With the momentum we’ve built, 2025 promises new opportunities to accelerate the clean energy transition. Our journey toward commercialization is just beginning, and we’re excited to see what’s next.

From all of us at Amogy, thank you for your support and belief in our mission. Here’s to a future fueled by innovation and sustainability.

Happy New Year!
