Success Story

World’s First Carbon-Free, Ammonia-Powered Truck

It’s increasingly clear that the transportation sector must mitigate carbon emissions with the help of alternative fuels. While hydrogen and battery technologies are gathering traction, there is another option that offers a compelling alternative.

That fuel? Ammonia.

Demo date:

January 2023

Power scale:

300 kW

Ammonia-to-electrical power conversion:

40%

Location:

Stony Brook, NY

Decarbonizing the transport industry, one mile at a time.

After successful demonstrations of a drone (5 kW) and tractor (100 kW), Amogy scaled up its technology by a factor of three. We purchased a 2018 Freightliner Cascadia Class 8 semi-truck to demonstrate the performance and power improvements of our product.

As with our tractor demonstration, we removed the diesel engine and retrofitted the truck with our ammonia-to-electrical power solution.

The ammonia tanks were mounted to where the diesel tanks originally were. The stored ammonia was fed into Amogy’s cracking system, which converted the ammonia into hydrogen. The hydrogen then passed through the fuel cell and is turned into electrical power.

Driving towards a sustainable future

After just eight minutes of fueling the ammonia tank, the semi-truck, which had 900 kWh of total stored net electric energy, was tested and run successfully for several hours on the campus of Stony Brook University.

Following this success, we brought the truck to Brooklyn and tested it at our home in the Brooklyn Navy Yard.

The Results

Carbon free

First ever ammonia-powered, zero-carbon truck.

Noise reduction

Significantly reduced noise levels compared to diesel-powered trucks.

Efficient NH3 conversion

Achieved 40% ammonia-to-electrical power conversion.
