About amogy

FAQs

The journey to clean energy is fast-paced and always evolving, so it’s natural to have questions. We’re here to help you find answers.

Where does the name Amogy come from? And how do you pronounce it?

Amogy is an abbreviation or "portmanteau" of two words: ammonia and energy. We pronounce Amogy “Am-uh-gee".

Who founded Amogy?

Amogy was founded in 2020 by four MIT PhDs: Seonghoon Woo, Young Suk Jo, Jongwon Choi, and Hyunho Kim.

Where is Amogy located?

Amogy is headquartered in Brooklyn, New York, with additional locations in Houston, Texas; Norway; Singapore; and Korea.

What is ammonia? Why did you choose it as a fuel?

Ammonia (NH3) consists of one nitrogen atom and three hydrogen atoms and is one of the most commonly produced industrial chemicals. Ammonia has higher energy density than other alternative fuels, is carbon free, and the infrastructure is widely available. Learn more about why we chose ammonia here.

What is Amogy’s technology?

Amogy’s proprietary ammonia cracking technology is mature, scalable, and a highly efficient method for splitting ammonia, generating hydrogen used to produce electrical power.

What is Amogy’s product?

Amogy develops ammonia-to-power systems that provide clean, carbon-free power. We also supply our ammonia cracking catalysts, which provide leading reforming activity.

Has the technology been demonstrated in real-world applications?

Yes, our technology has been demonstrated in a drone, tractor, truck, and most recently in the world’s first zero-carbon ammonia-powered tugboat—the NH3 Kraken. Learn more here.

What industries does Amogy support?

How will Amogy contribute to decarbonizing hard-to-abate sectors?

Our mission is to build technology that unlocks ammonia’s potential as a clean energy solution, accelerating the global journey to Net Zero. Our products provide carbon-free, ammonia-to-electrical power. Read more about our Ammonia-to-Power technology and our Ammonia Cracking Catalyst.

What is the Amogy tugboat?

The NH3 Kraken is the world’s first zero-carbon ammonia-powered tugboat. The vessel was retrofitted with Amogy’s ammonia-to-power system and successfully demoed along the Hudson River. Read more here.
